About James Smith

Image

Welcome to my web site.  I moved from York to the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland in 1991 and established the OISEVAL GALLERY in the crofting village of Brue on the Atlantic Coast of the Island. During my 20 years spent at my gallery in Brue on the Isle of Lewis I produced an extensive porfolio of award winning fine art photographic images of the Outer Hebrides including St Kilda. I found the incredible unspoilt natural beauty, constantly changing light, mood, and weather a tremendous inspiration for my work.

I am now based on the coast of the Solway Firth in Cumbria where I am once again, as in my time in the Hebrides, constantly inspired to produced photographic images of a wild coastal landscape with constantly changing light and wonderful open skies. I look back on my time in the Outer Hebrides with many happy memories of not just the wonderful photographic oppourtunities there but also the friendship and kindness of the people of the Islands. I must say without doubt that many return visits to the Outer Hebrides are a certainty in future plans.

I worked for many years with  Mamiya RZ67 and Linhof 617 Technorama panoramic camera. At present I work with a both my film and Nikon DX3 digital camera's. I find that sometimes film will give me a better result than digital and so I intend to continue using both for the time being.

The images displayed on my web site are all available for sale via the web site. I have many other images also available for purchase which are not at present displayed on this site and I welcome inquiries regarding these. Images are printed on Hahnemuhle Fine Art 305 gsm Ultra Smooth paper using the latest Epson 7900 wide format printer and Ultrachrome K3 pigment inks. This combination of ink and paper gives a print life in excess of 100 years.

In addition to my Outer Hebrides images I also have an extensive collection of images covering Mainland Scotland, North Yorkshire, The Scottish Borders, and more recently Cumbria.

I welcome inquiries regarding commercial use of my images.
